KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City's seemingly endless winter has put the housing market on ice.

"It's been very tough," Sherri Oaks, real estate agent with ReeceNichole Real Estate, said. "Open houses happen on the weekends and so has mother nature."

Realtors across the metro are seeing a big decline in the market.

"This is a new definition of cold by Kansas City standards," Jim Kraus Jr. with Brookside Real Estate Company said.

Inside Brookside wrote that homes in Brookside in January 2018 were on the market for 41 days. This year, it's almost twice as long.

Brookside is not the only place feeling the freeze.

"We're seeing them come on," Oaks said. "But, in Independence and in Blue Springs, those numbers are down."

Oaks said she is seeing the decline.

"Sales are down over 20 percent," she said.

With the prolonged cold weather, people just don't want to leave their homes.

"They are looking," Oaks said. "They are online and they are calling and inquiring. They are just not ready to get in their cars and go look."

The advice realtors have for sellers?

"If people go out in this type of cold, they are serious buyers," Kraus said.

You might be thinking what if I want to put up my house for sale soon?

Experts said to do it now.

"I think you should get your house ready, because I think once it hits and its already starting to, regardless of the weather, stuffs going to fly off the shelves," Kraus said.
