KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A relative of Tyrann Mathieu has been charged with attempting to extort more than $1 million from the Kansas City Chiefs safety.

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors in New Orleans charged Geourvon Sears, a family relative of Mathieu, with transmitting threats through interstate communications.

A spokesperson for Mathieu said the issue involving Sears, whom the spokesman said was undergoing a “mental health crisis,” was a “private and personal family matter.”

Mathieu was signed by the Chiefs in March.
