KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A new report from the American Wind Energy Association says more energy is generated from wind than coal in Kansas.

According to the report, 41 percent of the state’s energy now comes from wind, a figure the report attributes to the state’s highest-in-the-nation growth in wind generation during the last five years.

“Kansas has created a leading model for integrating wind power and harnessing the energy source to not just power our homes and businesses, but also our economy at large,” Rep. Don Hineman (R - Dighton) said in a release about the report. “Wind is now the leading source of electricity generation in our state, and the report’s findings further underscore how critical it is that our state remain at the forefront of wind power investment.”

The report says Kansas’ wind energy production is enough to power nearly two million homes.
