ORIGINAL | KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Three people are dead and several others critically injured following a wreck Friday afternoon.

Emergency crews were sent to the intersection of E. 23rd Street and Television Place just after 3:30 p.m. on the crash, near the border of Independence and Kansas City.

At least two cars were involved in the crash.

Police tell 41 Action News that Independence Police were chasing a stolen blue Jeep Patriot with four suspects inside at a high rate of speed.

Police momentarily lost sight of the Jeep and when they caught back up, they discovered the Jeep had crashed into a silver Dodge Avenger that was not involved in the chase.

Four people were in the silver passenger car. A man and woman in the silver car died in the crash. One suspect also died in the Jeep.

Five others - two people in the car and three suspects in the Jeep - were injured. Four were taken to the hospital in critical condition and the driver of the Jeep was in serious but not life-threatening condition.

The chase started at E. 23rd Street and Maywood, three miles east of the crash.

The intersection is likely to remain closed while police investigate the scene.
