KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Shawnee City Council has laid out its plan for filling the vacancy left by Justin Adrian.

Adrian resigned from the council shortly before he was charged with having unlawful sexual relations with a student at Olathe East High School. Adrian was a teacher at the school.

Council Committee members decided to recommend appointing a new Ward Three councilmember immediately. If approved by the full council, the vacancy will be advertised starting after the council meeting on Oct. 10.

The city will accept applications until Nov. 1. The council will vote on the appointment Nov. 13 and swear in the selected candidate the same day.

In November 2019, the city would hold a special election in conjunction with the general election to find a permanent replacement for the position. The special election will come at no extra cost to taxpayers because it will be held along with with the general election.
