KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Shawnee Mission School District released a statement Sunday night responding to allegations of bullying, sexism and racism within the district.

School officials released the statement after the Kansas City Star published an investigation involving Horizons High School.

The paper's investigation alleges the principal at the school fostered a "toxic culture."

Officials said the district is "limited by law" on what they can share about the issue since it involves staff and students.

The statement said that Board of Education policies and procedures were followed to take action and investigate the incident.

However, the newspaper article gave cause for a new investigation.

"The article included new information not previously reported. Given the new information contained in the article, and due to the now public nature of this issue, the district will secure a third party to conduct an independent and confidential investigation," the district's statement read.

The district said the Board of Education cannot comment on the investigation due to confidentiality matters.
