Study finds many Americans are sleepy at work

If you're feeling a little sleepy at work, you're not alone.

A new study from Accountemps finds 74 percent of Americans are sometimes tired while on the job.

"That doesn't surprise me at all," said Dr. Shais Jallu, a sleep expert at St. Luke's.

Dr. Jallu says that leaves workers in a very bad spot, often hurting their on-the-job performance.

"The process of sleep helps with your physiology, with your memory. It helps you relax," said Dr. Jallu.

The study says managers should make sure employees aren't overworked, make their schedules more flexible and encourage breaks.

Dr. Jallu believes it's also up to the workers, especially shift workers like firefighters or nurses, to make sure they're getting enough sleep away from work.

"We can't just be telling people to nap and not be getting adequate sleep at night," said Dr. Jallu.

At Henderson Engineers in Lenexa, they offer employees a quiet room in which they can relax or even take a nap.

"I use it when I realize I haven't gotten away from my desk for a couple hours, and I could use a little bit of time to clear my head," said employee Brittany Green.

The study found only 2 percent of American employers offer a nap room.
