KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A teenager is facing charges in connection with a June assault at the Bingham-Waggoner Estate in Independence, according to court records.

A volunteer for the city’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department was working at the historic site on June 17 when she was carjacked and assaulted, police said.

According to court records, 17-year-old Selvin Cruz of Independence stopped the woman when she pulled into the estate’s parking lot and demanded she hand over her car keys.

When she refused, Cruz allegedly stabbed her.

The woman tried to walk away, but Cruz grabbed her, told her to give him the keys and stabbed her again, according to court records.

He then sped away from the parking lot in the woman’s Honda Civic.

When Independence police officers pulled over Cruz, he allegedly tried to run away.

Cruz, who turned 17 in August, was charged as an adult in Jackson County with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.
