KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Almost two dozen people have applied to clear their criminal records in Leavenworth County, since the first of the year.

It's part of County Attorney Todd Thompson's "Expungement Day" program.

Thompson is partnering with several area attorneys who will provide assistance to people applying for expungements, which results in records of previous arrests or convictions being sealed.

On Thursday, he held a town hall meeting to discuss the program and answer questions.

Those seeking expungements can find the forms on the County Attorney's website.

The application needs to be completed and returned it to the County Attorney's Office by March 8.

The County Attorney's Office will initially review the applicant. Then, the applicant will be contacted by one of the local attorneys, who are volunteering their time.

If an applicant is eligible, the form will go before a judge. If an applicant is not eligible but can be fixed, the attorney will help.

According to Thompson, homicide and sex crimes cannot be expunged.

Those who are applying must have "a clean record" for a specified time, depending on the charge.
