Two people have been charged for allegedly abusing a dog named King, who was found emaciated with deep wounds from a chain tied to his neck.

41 Action News first reported on the incident when it happened in January.

Andre C. Brown is charged with the Class E felony of Animal Abuse by Torture and/or Mutilation, along with a misdemeanor charge of Animal Abuse in Jackson County.

Shalonda Robertson is charged with a Class A misdemeanor of Animal Abuse. She has an initial arraignment scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 27.

She and Brown are both from Kansas City, Missouri.

Court records say 3-year-old King was found by Kansas City Animal Control officers.

He was suffering from deep wounds to his neck, caused by a chain. King was also extremely thin and emaciated, indicating he was being starved, and he was kept in an unclean area.

When the animal control officers freed him, King began having seizures. He became unresponsive and was not able to stand on his own.

King was taken to the KC Pet Project.

He was adopted about three weeks ago by a family in the Warrensburg area.

The shelter told 41 Action News it took six months of hard work to get him rehabilitated so he could find his "furever" home.
