Major upgrades are on the way for two North Kansas City high schools whose stadiums have been in the dark for decades.
The NKC school board just approved a bid to install four new LED light poles at Oak Park High and Winnetonka High.
Oak Park was built in 1965 and Winnetonka in 1972. They've never hosted a night home game, and played at North Kansas City High and Staley High.
"Everybody has kind of made do, but this will create a lot of equity for those places," Executive Director of Activities and Athletics Fred Bouchard said.
The new lighting will also bring convenience to the schools' athletic programs.
"Safety for those students practicing early in the morning or late at night on those hot, hot summer August days, and again just giving them something in their own backyard, to be able to walk back and get their work done," Bouchard said.
The work is expected to finish by this fall.
Capital Electric will do the work for around $667,500.
School officials say they had money leftover from a 2014 bond issue.
