KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Missouri – Kansas City said a restructuring of the school’s staffing is behind this week’s announcement to cut 17 jobs.

A university spokeswoman said the cuts included 11 staff in academic units and six more administrative positions.

The university has been engaged in a multi-month review process, the spokeswoman said, in an effort to reduce the school’s deficit while also looking for “long-term growth and progress.”

“Leaders in administrative and academic units have been making difficult decisions as part of this process,” a part of a university statement read. “This is an incredibly difficult time for everyone. We greatly appreciate the contributions made by each of these colleagues to our mission of teaching, research and service.”

University budgets in Missouri have been under scrutiny the last two years as leaders navigate a challenging budget climate in Jefferson City.
