KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Leaders from several jurisdictions addressed ongoing stay-at-home orders and and plans to reopen the Kansas City metro economy on Friday morning.

Representatives from Wyandotte and Johnson Counties in Kansas and Jackson County, Missouri, stood outside Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas, in an effort to show solidarity among the communities in the metro. Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas said on Twitter he was unable to join because he was on a phone call with Missouri Gov. Mike Parson.

Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, Chief Medical Officer Dr. K. Allen Greiner opened the news conference.

"We're making progress, but we're not in the clear yet," Greiner said of the metro's efforts to control the spread of COVID-19.

Johnson County Health Department Director Dr. Sanmi Areola said that it's important for the metro to work collaboratively.

"We don't have walls around our cities or counties," Areola said.

While the news conference didn't address specific jurisdictions' plans, the Unified Government's Public Health Department posted its plans online Friday morning.

The Johnson County, Kansas, Board of County Commissioners is set to meet Friday to approve that county's reopening plan. Leaders there wanted to wait for Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly to announce the state's reopening plan, which she did in an address Thursday night.
