The heavy rain Kansas City experienced Monday and Tuesday gave plenty of homeowners a surprise. Many neighbors' basements are flooded because their sump pumps quit, causing water to collect inside the home.

The Now KC's Alyson Bruner chatted with a tech at Bob Hamilton Plumbing to learn the ways you can prevent flooding.

Below are a few things to keep in mind if you have a sump pump:
  • Clean debris around the sump pump.
  • Consider replacing the motor every five to seven years.
  • To keep water from seeping through the basement walls and foundation, put dirt outside to divert water.
  • Have your sump pump checked on a regular basis.
