Westport QuikTrip wants to expand: Will it meet neighbors needs?

A popular Westport Road QuikTrip could be expanding, but it's being met by some skepticism from neighbors.

QuikTrip brought up the idea of a remodel and expansion last fall, but it was rejected by the Kansas City Planning Commissioners.

Members of the West Plaza Neighborhood Association brought up at least 11 issues with the original plan they wanted to see changed.

Those include the following:

  • Apartment buildings on the west side of Mercier Street won’t be demolished.
  • Additional pedestrian paths will be added to the expanded site, including a pedestrian crossing the company says it will install across Westport Road.
  • Reducing the height of the building and the canopy so they are less visible from the street.
  • The plan will maintain a connection for pedestrians and vehicles to access Mercier Street, though the company would own the street.
  • Additional landscaping would be added on the south side of the proposal.
  • The goal of the expansion would partially be to make the older style QuikTrip look more modern and accessible.

On June 1, there will be a special meeting with the West Plaza Neighborhood Association for members to take a look at the new plan.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

The new plan will be up for city review on June 14.
