Wet weather not drowning out fireworks sales

The gloomy morning gave owners of fireworks stands a little scare.

The manager of the tent on the corner of Southwest Blvd. and Rainbow says they typically double their sales from all previous days combined on the Fourth of July.

For that reason, waking up to the rain was a little nerve racking.

“This day is really important for us. We do a lot of business today. A lot of people are going to go out and shoot their fireworks off today and honestly a lot of people wait until the last minute,” said Matt Hicks who manages an Independence, Missouri fireworks stand.

Last year the tent made $80,000, half of which was raked in just on the holiday.

Another stand owner says even though the rain kept some customers away, he thinks it’s a good thing… as long as it stops.

Wet grounds and roofs mean less chance of fireworks starting fires.

“It’ll be a lot safer for people. They’ll just feel a lot better about shooting them,” said Skip Clinton, owner of a fireworks tent in Riverside.
