What to do with your old electronic devices

What do you do with some of your old items that are collecting dust? Do not throw them away, because they might actually be worth something.

"Bring them into us, they probably have value to them of some sort," said Matt Paperi, Owner of Digital Pitstop. "If not again, we'll recycle them the right way."

This summer, people are turning in their old cell phones, computers and tablets to earn quick bucks. Buying those unwanted devices is Device Pitstop in Overland Park, Kansas.

"We want to be fair with someone, we don't want to pay too little, we don't want to pay too much, but we are definitely fair with what we pay and we pay cash," Paperi said.

It’s the summer months where you could be handed top-dollar for your devices.

"They're upgrading in the summer time because they just got out of school, their kids are done with college now they want to get something new," said Paperi.

Device Pitstop is looking to buy your electronics, as long as they’re still on the market. If they are not, the company will recycle the items for free. They will do so the right way, wiping all of the devices clean for you.

"The digital footprint in today's world unfortunately there's a lot of people out there who will steal your identity and the way they do that is through computers people just throw into the garbage," Paperi said.

Protecting her personal information was something Jen Ozment was worried about. She bought a new iPhone and was looking to get rid of the old, outdated one.

"Yeah, I was worried because you could sell it on craigslist or something like that to try to get a little bit more money for it but walking in here, you know that they're going to take your information off and they're not going to try to use your information," she said.

Ozment walked out with $100 cash in hand.

She suggests if you haven’t already, go through your kitchen drawers, office, and other places where old gadgets may hide. If you’re going through your old electronics and happen to have a Macbook Pro that you no longer want or use, Device Pitstop could offer you up to $1,000 for it.
