KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jackson County on Friday further limited the number of people who can gather at events as local and state governments continue to take steps to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

County Executive Frank White Jr. said in a news release that the modified state of emergency will ban all events with 250 people or more. His office said that was “consistent with guidelines” from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other state’s policies.

The restriction applies to all group events where people are not separated by at least 4 feet. It does not apply to schools, public transportation, airports or stores.

White said he made the decision to amend the order after the first death related to COVID-19 in the metro was reported in Wyandotte County. It also was the first confirmed case of local transmission in Kansas or Missouri.

The state of emergency applies to all of eastern Jackson County. It does not apply to Kansas City, Missouri.

On Thursday, KCMO Mayor Quinton Lucas issued a state of emergency for the city and said that no event with 1,000 people or more would be allowed for the next 21 days.
