Former mayor of Lawrence charged with embezzlement

Posted

A former mayor of Lawrence faces a federal embezzlement charge after prosecutors say he stole thousands of dollars from a food bank in Douglas County.

While serving as mayor, Jeremy Farmer, 32, also served as executive director at Just Food. The Douglas County food bank serves more than 40 partner agencies with frozen meat, fresh produce and donated food items.

Prosecutors say from 2013 to 2015, Farmer used his access to the food bank’s accounts to steal more than $5,000 from the organization.

For that crime, Farmer faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted.

Around the same time, Farmer was accused of using a city credit card for personal charges.

Farmer was elected in April 2015 and resigned in August 2015.
