Hundreds of Pokémon players of all ages gathered at the Overland Park Convention Center this weekend to compete in the Spring Regional Championships.
Phillip Barragan, 9, is already a 2-time regional champion, but he is still playing for a top spot so his trip to the world championships is picked up by Pokémon organizers.
The popularity of the anime character has grown in popularity over the past 20 years since it first arrived in the U.S.
Competitors played in the cards version, as well as the video game.
The 2016 Pokémon World Championships will be held in San Francisco in August.
