Police, local communities come together for National Night Out

Police across the country are looking to bring back a true sense of community through their annual National Night Out campaign.

The Overland Park Police Department is just one of the organizations meeting with the community members they serve daily. Police departments across the metro area will be out in full force Tuesday, but not in the traditional sense.

"It's a big party is what it is, it's a big party," said Officer John Lacy, Overland Park Police Department.

National Night Out started back in 1984 and Overland Park Police picked up the event nearly 10 years ago.

"Our police department, we want to be very transparent, and at the same time we love our community and from time to time there's a lot of negative contact with the police but this one is very very positive," said Lacy.

Tuesday, National Night Out will bring police officers and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

"We have officers on scene that are willing to talk to the neighbors and give feedback and that's what we want, we want them to give us feedback, tell us how we're doing, how can we improve," said Lacy.

All National Night Out events are free and open to the public. Overland Park Police say they hope this event will help build relationships and fight crime in the community.
