Curtis Ayers, the man accused of killing Kansas City, Kansas Police Detective Brad Lancaster, was moved from Jackson County to the Wyandotte County Detention Center on Wednesday.

Around 11 a.m., a white Wyandotte County cruiser pulled up with Ayers in the backseat. He was taken directly into the sally port on the north side of the detention center where jail staff said nurses would meet him.

The community rallied together after Lancaster was shot and killed near the Kansas Speedway on May 9 after responding to a call about suspicious activity.

That’s when detectives said Ayers went on a crime spree that ended on Highway 71, when a KCPD officer shot and wounded him.

Ayers spent six weeks recovering at Research Medical Center.

Sgt. David Toland said he was not sure of Ayers’ medical condition and medical staff will evaluate his health. Toland said Ayers can walk but has been getting around in a wheelchair.

He said Ayers will be in a room with 24-hour video surveillance in the medical unit. He said deputies will check in on him about every 15 minutes and that nurses will look in on him.

Ayers’ first court appearance for charges in Wyandotte County will be on Friday.
