Independence fire crews had to put out a fire twice at an apartment building overnight.

Now they're investigating how the fire got past the building's firewall.

Fire crews got a call around 3 a.m. about smoke coming from a building at Summerset Apartments in Independence, Missouri. They helped everyone in the building to safety and thought the fire was out. No one was hurt.

The fire reignited around 7:45 a.m., calling crews out a second time.

Chief Deputy Mark Carrick told 41 Action News they think the fire started in the basement, probably from an electrical issue. It spread up the building's utility chase, filling all 24 units with smoke. Crews cut into the roof and residents' apartments to access the chase.

The American Red Cross is helping 9 displaced families.
