Police are investigating following a deadly crash in Raytown early Monday morning.

Authorities said a resident called police just after 1 a.m. to report what looked like a car on fire on Raytown Road at about 85th Street. The first officer to arrive found the scene of a crash involving a car that had overturned and was fully engulfed in fire. Before crash investigators arrived, the first officers on the scene said they discovered debris from the crash spread for about a block or more.

The car had been traveling south on Raytown Road and the first signs of an apparent crash were noted just north of 84th Street, according to police. The car came to rest at 85th Street. The driver, trapped in the wreckage, was dead by the time officers and firefighters arrived.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is under way, but the first officers at the scene believed that high speed was a likely contributor to the crash, authorities said. No other car was involved and it appeared that the driver was alone in the vehicle.
