CLINTON, Mo. — An error with the Henry County dispatch system sent Clinton police officers to a wrong address and triggered a tragic chain of events, killing an officer and injuring two others.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, dispatchers answered a 911 call late Tuesday night and heard two women screaming. Neither women spoke to dispatchers directly, said Sgt. Bill Lowe with the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

When Officers Christopher Ryan Morton, Nick Kasper and Nathan Bettencourt entered the home, all three officers were shot.

Morton died shortly after.

The next day, Lowe said the 911 call was traced to a home in Windsor, Missouri, about 20 miles northeast of Clinton.

It is unclear if it was human error or a computer glitch, which led officers to the home in Clinton.

The Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate.
