A Kansas City firefighter won $77,777 after a series of non-routine events led him to the convenience store for a cup of coffee.

Sam Santa Maria said he was out of K-cups at his house, which he says doesn’t ever happen, so he walked to the corner store for a cup of joe.

He had $5 in cash, which he didn’t usually carry with him, but opted to use his debit card for the coffee and the cash for a Missouri Lottery “7” Scratcher.

He said he choose that particular game because he’d never won it and he “was mad at it.”

He thought he’d just won $77 but couldn’t believe it as he scratching continued to reveal sevens all the way up to the big prize.

Santa Maria said he’s going to get “even Steven” and pay off his debt. He also wants to put money in savings for a down payment on a house.

“7” is a Missouri Lottery ticket that went on sale earlier this year and still has more than $7.4 million in remaining prizes. That includes three more top prizes like Santa Maria’s of $77,777.
