KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As the workday wrapped up. dozens of Kansas City Chiefs fans made their way into the Power and Light District in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, for a socially distanced watch party at the KC Live! Block.

"I don't really see anyone around us," one of those Chiefs fans, Mychaela Sprouse, said. "It's pretty much just us. They have the table spread out. It's pretty awesome."

Everywhere you looked, there were reminders of how to stay safe amid a pandemic.

"It’s been coronavirus, so we've been stuck in the house for a while, so it just kind of feels good to kind of get out, socially distance," another Chiefs fan, Micah Smith, said. "It's just a good time."

The efforts were all made to watch the reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs kick off the NFL season at home.

As the party got going, fans tried to respect each other space.

While masks were required for anyone entering the district's bars, they weren't required outside and a majority of patrons weren't wearing one.

Under KCMO's emergency order, masks are recommended in crowds outdoors but not required.

The crowd size Thursday was nowhere near that of the last Chiefs celebration for Super Bowl LIV in February.

"It was way more packed than this before, elbows to elbows," Chiefs fan Cheyenne Jordan said. "It’s been way worse than this before."

Chiefs Kingdom was just excited to see their team back on the field.

"You don’t realize how excited I am to be having football back," Harris Mgbike said. "Football is my life. I'm a football nut. I still play to the day. It's my life, so I'm glad it's back."

The crowd might have been much smaller, but the excitement and passion of the fans remained the same.
