ORIGINAL STORY | Hopefully, the Chiefs don’t go into vacation mode early.

Kansas City will host a spunky Carolina Panthers team at noon Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

First-year coach Matt Rhule’s squad has been surprisingly competitive during the first half of the season, including a win against the Arizona Cardinals and close games against the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints.

And those results all came without star running back Christian McCaffrey in the lineup, but his return — and the chance for Rhule and company to send a message and claim a signature win against the reigning Super Bowl champs — should have the Panthers ready to roll.

The Chiefs’ biggest star, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, had high praise for McCaffrey.

Still, our “4th & 1” podcast crew don’t think Carolina matches up well with Kansas City, which hopes to improve to 8-1 before the upcoming bye week.

The Home of the Chiefs has you covered as always on game day.

The Chiefs have been dominant the past two weeks, crushing the Broncos in Denver and outclassing the New York Jets.

Hopefully, there will be a few more elated 6-year-olds after Kansas City’s tussle with Carolina.

Perhaps second-year wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr. also can back up a breakout game last week with another strong performance.

Hardman has seen his role grow with wide receiver Sammy Watkins’ absence during the past month.

Kansas City has been without right tackle Mitchell Schwartz and wide receiver Sammy Watkins for the past three weeks and will be again Sunday as both were ruled out by the Chiefs.

Watkins returned to practice, but not in a full capacity this week and will get at least two more weeks of rest before a Nov. 22 rematch with the Raiders in Las Vegas.

Fullback Anthony Sherman, a special teams ace, has been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list and will be available against Carolina.

But there was another COVID-19 case reported Thursday, when Kansas City confirmed that a staff member had tested positive and defensive tackle Chris Jones was briefly placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Jones was removed from the list Friday and returned to practice, so he should play against the Panthers.

If you’ve ever wondered whether Mahomes’ knee injury last season in Denver impacts coach Andy Reid’s decision-making on QB sneaks, it does.

DeAndre Washington was traded to the Miami Dolphins ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
