KU alters plan for guns at 2017 sporting events

The University of Kansas may make changes to security at its sports venues when the state begins allowing guns on campus in 2017.

A KU-specific plan is still being drafted, but leaders plan to prohibit guns from Allen Fieldhouse and Memorial Stadium.

Some fans are OK with the idea of having guns at games.

"Well as a fan, I think as long as you are legally able to carry a gun, and you’ve got your concealed carry, I think it’s completely fine for you to have your gun," said Cheryl Womack, a KU basketball season-ticket holder.

A new security plan could include metal detectors, instead of a simple bag check.

"It will be a lot more inconvenient," Womack added. "It will be like going through an airport. It's just one more step."

"If it holds up the lines, I think that's a little bit of an inconvenience,” said KU fan Rachel Bizzell.

KU's Weapons on Campus Committee continues to meet with groups across campus.

A formal plan is set to be in place by July 2017, when the gun law takes effect.
