International company opens US base in Kansas City

It's a long time coming. Kansas City has been working tirelessly to make the metro a place that people not only want to live but also work and that requires quality jobs. Now that hard work may pay off.

"When we were looking at where do we put our headquarters for the US, the team decided on Kansas City because it was so centrally located and we had the talent we needed," said Jason Hughes, the vice president of U.S. sales and operations for Absolunet.

Absolunet is an e-commerce company based in Montreal, Quebec. When it decided to expand, it looked no further than Kansas City since it's centrally based.

"Kansas City was a personal selection," said Hughes, who has lived in the metro for the past 13 years. "I had a conversation with the board, I had a conversation with our executives. They did not know Kansas City that well, and so when I was able to talk to them about our history of art and science; [how] we had all these people who were already great designers and we had these people who already knew how to build software. It was such a natural fit and that help a lot in drawing the company here."

Currently, the company is comprised of 110 employees, nearly all of which are based in Canada. Absolunet hopes to add 110 employees in its Kansas City office. Right now, U.S. employees are working out of a shared workspace, but Absolunet expects to find a permanent workspace in the Crossroads district soon.
