KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A shelf cloud is a very photogenic cloud associated with a strong thunderstorm capable of producing damaging wind gusts.

Shelf clouds can be spotted from miles away and can stretch miles long.

As a shelf cloud moves through, onlookers will notice high winds and a big drop in temperatures, followed by rain and sometimes hail.
