Just one day after a fiery multi-car crash on I-435 near Antioch, some drivers ignored posted construction zone speed limits.

In five minutes, 41 Action News clocked eight cars traveling 60 mph or faster in the very stretch involved in Monday's crash. One was even going 70 mph, 15 mph above the posted speed limit.

Commuters and shoppers in Overland Park believe speeding is the reason behind recent crashes in the area.

"It's a rarity to not see an accident in the construction zone," Miranda Kelly, who works in Overland Park, remarked of the area.

Others try as best they can to avoid I-435 altogether.

"It just makes me nervous to have people zooming by me," said Alex Trevino, a new mom who shops in Overland Park.

Clarkson Construction is the company in charge of the $16.34 million project. A spokesman told us a KDOT engineering inspector is on scene everyday. However, even if the construction zone is well-planned, speeding drivers can still cause wrecks.

"My mom used to tell me there's nowhere that is more important than your life, so getting someplace a few minutes later because of construction... there's nothing wrong with that," Trevino added.

In April, Kansas Highway Patrol and Overland Park police teamed up to crack down on speeding along the I-435 construction zone involved in the wreck. We reached out to see if troopers will ramp up their presence there once again and are waiting for a response.
