A lapful of dogs. It's a dream for many, but for these pups -- the road to arriving in the arms of Great Plains SPCA was a rough one.

"You enrich the life of both that animal and the adopter," said Laura Kraemer, while holding seven-year-old Chihuahua, Blinky.

Kraemer handles lost and found at the shelter. She's fostered Blinky at her home for the past few weeks. He is one of the 46 dogs Great Plains SPCA took in earlier last month. The 46 dogs and three cats all belonged to one owner.

These are four of the 46 dogs that arrived at the shelter last month.

"She did take pretty good care of them. She was just in over her head. She needed help financially to take care of them," said Deena Miller who handles intake at the shelter. "They actually were in pretty good shape. Mostly just oral disease, dermatitis and skin issues. They have some hair loss, but for the most part, they are pretty good."

The pets arrived about a month ago. Since then, handlers have worked at helping them adjust to a new life as well as getting them vaccinated, spayed and neutered and medically ready to leave the shelter.

"We are in the business of saving lives here and these guys need homes," she said. "It's much better to rescue an animal than to get them from a breeder or pet store. You are supporting puppy mills and all those types of things when you go to a puppy store."

The shelter plans to keep 21 of the dogs in Independence. The remaining 25 will go to the Merriam location. The dogs will be ready for their new homes in about a week and will cost $300 to adopt.

"We have some that are more shy and will require them to be with them more and then some are more outgoing," said Kraemer. "Every person has a different need and we try to do our best to match them with  who will be best suited for them."

One warning, said the shelter. While the dogs were not neglected or abused, many do have social anxiety and most are not housebroken. Adopters should keep in mind that these are special needs dogs who do require training.
