1 dead in early-morning KCMO house fire

UPDATE, 11:45 a.m. — 41 Action News has learned one person died in the fire at 44th and Mersington early Monday morning.

A family member contacted the station to report the 63-year-old man's death. Reporter Rae Daniel confirmed the death with KCFD, which initially reported no injuries.

A department spokesperson said crews must have found the man during the "overhaul" process, in which they put out any hotspots and process the home.

The spokesperson theorized the man was covered up by debris.

PREVIOUS — KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City, Missouri, firefighters knocked down a fire early Monday morning in the 4400 block of Mersington Ave.

When they got to the scene, the house was fully involved.

Some firefighters fell through the floor of the house as they worked to extinguish the flames, but they are OK.

It took about 20 minutes for them to put the fire out.

No one was injured. 

Firefighters said they performed a thorough search of the home and found no victims.

A power line did come down at the back of the house.
