UPDATE, 3:22 p.m. | Shawnee police identified the victim as Treyvion Baskin, of Kansas City, Kansas.
He was located at 6:48 p.m. Sunday and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
ORIGINAL STORY | One person has died after going under water Sunday at a pond near Lind Road in Shawnee.
Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands said that crews received a call around 3:20 p.m. that a 20-year-old man was in the water.
“Three witnesses said that he was in the water then they couldn't see him anymore,” Sands said. “So we dispatched our rescue boats out here. Right now, we're still conducting a search and the Overland Park Police Departments dive teams on scene now to help assist Shawnee with that search.”
The witnesses and the man in the water were fishing and swimming, according to Sands. The pond, he said, is about 12 feet deep.
Several fire crews were on scene and two water rescue boats were on the water. Dive teams from Overland Park and Shawnee assisted.
