A Jackson County family said they are still in shock after their 6-month-old Pekingese mix was shot and killed by the man next door.

"She was very fun, playful. She liked to run the yard a couple times, go into the gate. She’s never been an aggressive dog,” said Crystal Andrade, the dog’s owner.

Monday night Andrade said her 10-year-old daughter, Megan, went outside to put the puppy in the backyard kennel. The dog got loose and ran into the neighbor’s yard.

“She was going to the kennel, she ran out into his yard and he started shooting,” said Megan. “It was loud. She was trying to run to me. She went under my legs and then she went back and he shot right under my legs.”

41 Action News tried to contact the neighbor but he was not home. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said the man will not face charges.

According to investigators, the man said he was working on his fence when the dog ran into his yard and bit his finger. Investigators said the man said he feared for his life so he shot the dog.

"They watched their dog get shot 5 times, who does that? You shoot him twice and then stop and wait to shoot her three more times? That is ridiculous,” Andrade said. “Something has to change.”
