Children in foster care are frequently forced to change schools as they move from one foster home to another. It’s common for them to attend several different schools during a single school year.

However, the new Every Student Succeeds Act allows them to stay at their original schools.

Below are some highlights from the new law that will affect children in foster care. The Every Student Succeeds Act, which replaces No Child Left Behind, will do the following:

  • Allows children in foster care to stay in their school when their foster home placements change
  • Requires schools to immediately enroll children in foster care after they change schools
  • Requires points of contact in schools and state education agencies
  • Requires plans for transporting a child in foster care to their “school of origin”
  • Requires tracking achievement and graduation rates for students in foster care and making the information public
