The Kansas Department of Transportation has closed a portion of Frontage Road near Shawnee Mission Medical Center due to major erosion.
Damage to the drainage outlet structure between Frontage Rd and NB I-35 along with recent rains has eroded the earth at a rapid rate. Water comes to this structure through a pipe located under the hospital's parking lot. The pipe then goes under I-35 and ultimately to Turkey Creek.
KDOT officials said Frontage Rd must be closed "to keep the shoulder slope from shifting due to weight of vehicles."
Frontage Rd is closed from 75th St to 74th St.
The closure is expected to last at least a month.
Patients can access the hospital using the 75th St or Antioch entrances. Other drivers are urged to use Antioch to bypass the closure.
