KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Unified Government Treasury Office is asking residents for patience as it tackles a backlog of car registrations and renewals.

The Treasury Office and its Department of Motor Vehicle locations were closed to the public for an 11-week period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But the problems didn't end once the doors reopened as staffing was limited because of government-wide furloughs.

“Unfortunately, the nature of our work, it just doesn’t disappear," Unified Government Director of Revenue Richard Mikesic. "It just waits."

According to a UG spokesperson, there are 2,122 active employees, including a majority who are exempt from furloughs. They include firefighters, police officers, district attorneys and transportation workers as well as grant-funded and enterprise-funded staff.

A total of 630 total employees were placed on furlough, including those who work at the Treasury’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

“It was estimated we had 22,000 transactions waiting from that period where we were closed and through the furlough period,” Mikesic said. “We do 15,000 transactions every month and you add 22,000 on top of that — and I have about two dozen staff to work — we are simply overwhelmed in every facet.”

For all motor vehicle work not related to titles, the public is required to use online, drop-off or mail-in options only. Those with questions can call the 311 Call Center or visit the Treasury’s website.

"We are approximately four weeks behind on mail and drop-off kind of work," Mikesic said. "Now that we have completed the furloughs, I am hopeful we can get caught up within the next two to three weeks."
