KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Five high school golfers in Johnson County were denied their request for a temporary restraining order that would have allowed them to compete this fall.

Four girls at Shawnee Mission East High School and one at Blue Valley High School filed a civil suit and the temporary restraining order on Wednesday, stating that they will not be able to play for college recruiters or possibly earn scholarships due to the districts canceling or postponing fall sports amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A temporary restraining order, according to the county court, is a “provisional remedy to preserve the status quo until a hearing can occur.” The court determined that the status quo was “no fall extracurricular activities at the time the case was filed.”

Late last month, the Shawnee Mission School District doubled down on its decision to start the fall semester remotely and cancel fall sports. But Blue Valley School District said Friday it would allow sports to continue, despite initially suspending extracurricular activities for two weeks.

Hope and Hanna Robinett, 18-year-old attendees of Shawnee Mission East, are named in the suit. The other girls are suing through their parents.

A hearing regarding a temporary injunction that would allow the student-athletes to compete has been scheduled for Sept. 11.
