University of Kansas Health System daily update

Chief medical officers from around the Kansas City area joined University of Kansas Health System officials for an update on COVID-19 in the region. All hospitals are worried that as they see a normal influx of patients in the colder months combined with COVID-19, staffing could become an issue.

Liberty Hospital is seeing the greatest increase in patients currently, and their chief medical officer said many patients are coming from the rural areas of Clay County.

All officials on the call agreed that holiday gatherings will be dangerous and could cause increased case numbers down the road.

Missouri middle schooler dies due to COVID-19 complications

The School District of Washington, Missouri, said eighth-grader Peyton Baumgarth was hospitalized due to symptoms of the virus and passed away over the weekend. The district is located near St. Louis. It's not clear if the student had underlying health problems.

Costco selling COVID-19 test kits online

Costco is selling saliva-based COVID-19 test kits online that can be administered at home. The basic test kit is listed for $129.99, while a kit with video observation is $139.99. A customer who purchases a kit from Costco must complete a health assessment online and register for a lab order and test kit. Results are promised within one to three days.

October shatters records for new COVID-19 cases, deaths across Kansas and Missouri

October was the deadliest month for the COVID-19 pandemic in the history of the seven-county Kansas City metro, Kansas and Missouri, according to data compiled from state and local health departments for the 41 Action News Daily COVID-19 Tracker.
