University of Kansas Health System daily update

During Wednesday's update from the University of Kansas Health System, doctors said they have 30 patients with active COVID-19 cases in the hospital. Of those, nine are in the ICU, and six are on a ventilator. There are 30 patients recovering in the hospital that are not considered to actively have the virus anymore. Dr. Dana Hawkinson said in October, the health system has seen 20 deaths from the virus in the hospital, the most since the pandemic started.

Guests Janelle Friesen from the Unified Government Public Health Department and Mariana Ramírez from the JUNTOS Center for Advancing Latino Health joined the call to talk about COVID-19 in Wyandotte County and in the Latinx community, respectively.

Hy-Vee looking to fill 200 positions in Kansas City area

Hy-Vee is hiring around 200 people to fill positions across the Kansas City area. Open positions include everything from personal shoppers to cashiers. Experience is not required, and all types of shifts are available.

Gov. Kelly considering mask mandate expansion

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said Wednesday that she is exploring all avenues to implement a statewide mask mandate. A statewide mask mandate was attempted in July, but 90 counties opted out. Kelly cited growing COVID-19 numbers as the reason to approach the issue again.

Gov. Parson calls special session for November

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson announced Wednesday that a special legislative session will take place in November to distribute CARES Act funding. The session will begin on Nov. 5 and will address funding for several areas. CARES Act funding must be distributed by the end of December or returned to the federal government.

Harvesters to receive $1M in CARES Act funding

The Harvesters food bank in Kansas City, Missouri, will receive nearly $1 million in CARES Act funds to help those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is one of six Missouri food banks receiving a total of $5 million in funding.

Kansas City Council to vote on extending outdoor dining ordinance

The Kansas City, Missouri, City Council will vote on an extension for the outdoor dining ordinance on Thursday. An extension would allow restaurants to continue setting up tables on sidewalks or streets to accommodate social distancing through April 2021.

COVID-19 outbreak at Northland nursing home kills 3

A COVID-19 outbreak at the Garden Valley Healthcare Center claimed the lives of three residents. A total of 98 residents and 44 staff members tested positive. The facility has a total of 156 beds.

RideKC operator tests positive for COVID-19

One RideKC operator tested positive for COVID-19 in October. They are the eighth operator to test positive overall.

They were operating the following routes:

  • 3-5 p.m., Main MAX on Sept. 26.
  • 6 a.m. - 4 p.m., Troost MAX, on Sept. 27.
  • 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., 47 Broadway, on Sept. 28.
  • 5:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., 101 State Ave., on Oct. 13 and 14.
  • 5:30 - 11:30 a.m., 101 State Ave., on Oct. 15.

Unemployment lowest since start of pandemic

U.S. unemployment dipped below 800,000 for the first time in months, with 787,000 new claims filed last week.

CDC changes definition of close contact

The Centers for Disease Control changed how it defines close contact to a person with COVID-19. The new recommendation considers anyone in contact with an infected person for 15 minutes over a 24-hour period to be a close contact and quarantine. It was previously recommended to quarantine if someone was in contact with an infected person for a 15-minute period at one time.
