KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Preliminary data released Monday by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment show the state blasting past the 100,000-mark of COVID-19 cases.

According to KDHE’s report, the state added 5,101 new COVID-19 cases to its total since Friday’s update. With Monday’s new cases, the state has had 104,392 people test positive since the beginning of the pandemic.

Like last Friday’s update, the number of new cases jumped in the majority of the state’s counties, though on a volume basis, the state’s two largest counties – Johnson and Sedgwick – continue to lead the way.

In Monday’s report, Johnson County added nearly 1,000 new cases for a total of 18,783. Sedgewick County added nearly 1,400 new cases for a total of 17,232, a nearly 9 percent increase just from the weekend.

The state added an additional 15 names to its list of people who have died from the virus. That list now totals 1,181.

Combined with local health departments, the state on Friday set a single-day record of new COVID-19 cases, reporting 5,175 new cases, according to a 41 Action News data analysis. That figure could be eclipsed later Monday as local health departments report additional details.
