KANSAS CITY, Mo. — University of Kansas Athletic Director Jeff Long said Wednesday four new COVID-19 cases have been reported on the football team.

Despite the positive tests, Long said the team will continue with voluntary practice activities.

In a statement Long said 90 players and staff members were tested for the coronavirus on Saturday.

According to the statement, the four student athletes who tested positive are, “are currently following isolation protocols established by our health care physicians and public health professionals.”

The decision to continue voluntary football activities was based upon the recommendation of physicians at Kansas Team Health, according to Long.

Just days ago, the university announced its season opener against the New Hampshire Wildcats was canceled after the Wildcats said they had postponed fall sports.

As of Wednesday, there were 24,327 confirmed COVID-19 patients, including 319 deaths, in Kansas.
