KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The first person admitted for in-patient treatment related to COVID-19 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital went home Tuesday.

Scott Bruegge had been hospitalized since March 25 with the virus. He was in isolation until April 6, when his symptoms abated and he tested negative twice.

During the past week, Bruegge, who is from Leavenworth County, has continued therapy — until Tuesday when the Lawrence Memorial staff, clad in masks and standing at least six feet apart, cheered as he was wheeled from the hospital.

“We are so pleased to celebrate Mr. Bruegge’s recovery today,” LMH Health President and CEO Russ Johnson said in a release. “I extend my sincere thanks to the exceptional team of providers who cared for our patient. I am grateful for all they did to ensure his safety, as well as the safety of our employees, patients and community.”

Visitors are prohibited at the hospital right now, so Bruegge has not been able to see his wife for three weeks.

That changed Tuesday morning when Bruegge’s wife, Shannon, met Scott outside the hospital to take him home.
