Live blog: KC metro tops 100 COVID-19 deaths

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, continues to spread across the world, and in Missouri and Kansas.

41 Action News is keeping track of all closings and cancellations, as well as tracking where positive coronavirus cases are located.

We are also keeping track of which metro jurisdictions are under stay at home orders for the foreseeable future, only allowing for essential business and activities.

Updates on the spread of the virus and how it is affecting the metro can be found below for April 19.

8:20 p.m. | Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced Sunday that Finney, Ford, Lyon and Seward counties now will be able to test for COVID-19 due to the state receiving additional personal protective equipment and supplies, according to a news release.

6:40 p.m. | Theatre in the Park has canceled its first four shows of the summer season. In a letter posted on its website, Producing Artistic Director Tim Bair said that Cinderella, All Shook Up, Big River and Newsies will no longer take place.

"As we all face this global health crisis and national emergency, it has become clear to us that we are not able to move forward as we originally planned," Bair said in the letter. "The health and safety of our patrons, artists and staff and greater theatre community is our number one priority."

3:40 p.m. | With two more COVD-19 deaths reported in Wyandotte County, the Kansas City metro now has more than 100 deaths related to the virus. There are 101 deaths in the metro and 37 deaths in Wyandotte County.

1:40 p.m. | The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is reporting more than 100 new positive cases of COVID-19 across the state. Clay County has one additional case, bring the total to 57.

Five more peope have died from the virus in Missouri.

1:07 p.m. | Johnson County, Kansas reported five new COVID-19 deaths Sunday afternoon, bringing the county's death toll to 30.

12:30 p.m. |The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is reporting six more deaths and 59 new positive cases of COVID-19 in the state.

Johnson County has three additional cases bringing that total to 372. Leavenworth County has added five more, bringing their total to 128. Wyandotte County is at 417 cases, after adding five more on Sunday.

9:30 a.m. | Here are the headlines to get you caught up for Sunday, April 19:

7 a.m. | Governor Laura Kelly reacted to the restraining order issued against her executive order to limit religious gatherings. She continues to encourage Kansans to limit mass gatherings, practice social distancing and stay home.

“This is not about religion. This is about a public health crisis,” Kelly said. “This ruling was just a preliminary step. There is still a long way to go in this case, and we will continue to be proactive and err on the side of caution where Kansans’ health and safety is at stake.”
