Live blog: Johnson County tops 1,000 COVID-19 cases

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, continues to spread across the world, and in Missouri and Kansas.

Updates on the spread of the virus and how it is affecting the metro can be found below for June 10.

6:10 p.m. | As Kansas City-area restaurants begin to reopen, some are having more success than others.

4:15 p.m. | The University of Missouri announced Wednesday it plans to resume in-person classes as the system's flagship university in Columbia on Aug. 24. University officials had previously considered starting classes two weeks earlier.

1 p.m. | Johnson County is now the fifth county in Kansas with more than 1,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to new information from the state health department.

Wyandotte County, which has the second-most coronavirus cases in the state, topped 1,600 and announced a 76th death — the most for any Kansas county.

12:34 p.m. | The VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System announced a phased reopening of services at its medical centers and clinics in Topeka and Leavenworth, beginning next week.

Face-to-face and VA Video Connect visits will increase by 25% on Monday and by 50% on June 29.

The VA Eastern Kansas system, which employs more than 2,000 people and provides services for more than 45,000 veterans, said eight staff members and 25 veterans among 1,200 tests administered were positive for COVID-19.

Health and temperature screening, limited building entry access, mandatory face masks and the reduced visitor policy will remain in effect through at least the end of June.

12:20 p.m. | The beach and sprayground at Lake Olathe will open Friday, but only Olathe residents will be allowed to use the beach.

Beach-goers will be required to make reservations for two-hour blocks in advance. The beach will be open from 11 .m. to 6 p.m. every Friday through Sunday. The sprayground will be open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

11:20 a.m. | The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment will ask the Board of County Commissioners to approve nearly $4.2 million for the creation of an Epidemiology Division.

The request, which is expected to be paid for with federal funds Johnson County received to address the COVID-19 pandemic, will be discussed during the board's regular meeting on Thursday.

10:45 a.m. | The Boru Ramen Bar in Waldo will not reopen. In a Facebook post, the owners cited the “current economic environment” as the reason for closing.

9:40 a.m. | Major League Soccer announced plans to return to action in a 54-match tournament in early July in Orlando.

9:14 a.m. | The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners will meet in-person Thursday for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Social-distancing measures will be put in place, including limited seating in the hearing room at 111 S. Cherry St. in Olathe.

6:06 a.m. | Swope Health partnered with City Union Mission to test all of the program's residents for COVID-19 on Tuesday. All 94 long-term residents tested negative, as did all staff members who were tested.

5:30 a.m. | The pandemic and associated stay-at-home orders have been especially isolating for those who can't care for themselves or can no longer get out and about. Many rely on groups like Paralyzed Veterans of America to make it through.

5 a.m. | Olathe is reopening two pools this week, but reservations are required and only Olathe residents may use the facilities.

Black Bob Bay, located at 14570 151st St., began accepting reservations at 12:30 p.m. on Monday. The lazy river and bucket area at the facility remain closed.

There is a maximum of 250 spots available per session and registration opens on Wednesdays for the next week.

Mill Creek Pool, 320 E. Poplar St., will open at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 12, with up to two-hour time slots available.

There are three time periods available with a 30-minute break between sessions to allow staff to clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces.

Admission is $5 per person per two-hour period.
