KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A local fraternity is doing its part to help small businesses in the Kansas City area.
Omega Psi Phi members gathered at 18th and Vine on Saturday afternoon to support the restaurant, Bayou on the Vine.
“We felt that we wanted to make a difference in our community," said Tyrone Taylor.
Taylor told 41 Action News the group of more than 25 members were practicing social distancing while supporting the community.
“We want to make this healthy. Everybody has their mask on, we’re trying to stay 6-feet apart," said Taylor.
The goal was to order 100 meals from the nearly 3-year-old restaurant that did not receive funding from the Paycheck Protection Program.
“To be able to have the support that we have and the exposure we have, it’s been great," said Cortne' Green, co-owner of Bayou on the Vine.
Green told 41 Action News the restaurant is grateful to have customer support and said they are taking the pandemic one day at a time.
“Everyday, it’s a gamble. We don’t know what we’re going to expect as far as people coming in, who’s going to call, who’s going to order," said Green.
For the next 3-4 weeks, Taylor said his fraternity brothers and hopefully their friends and family will be meeting at a new location to support different local businesses.
“We’re just kind of picking people that have been good to the community, you know, restaurants that have been in the Kansas City area for a long time. They’ve been good people, they’ve served the community well, they’ve helped others, so we just want to kind of help them as well," said Taylor.
