KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A local World War II veteran who turned 102 on Saturday received a surprise parade for his birthday.

Cars lined the street for Thomas Winston and drove by his home as he waved to them from his driveway.

Brett Winston, Thomas’ son, said the parade was “all about” people caring about each other and being safe at the same time.

“I don't think a lot of people are really taking this as serious as it is,” Winston said of the coronavirus pandemic. “But as bad as I want to go up and give my dad a hug, and give my family hugs, I mean, we're not even doing it. You know, so it's a little bit more serious than people think."

Health officials have encouraged the public to practice social distancing to try and stop the spread of COVID-19.
