Independence man charged in September murder

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 21-year-old Independence man has been charged in the shooting death of Robiell Avilla, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

The announcement was made Wednesday.

Demarco Watkins is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, three counts of armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm for the Sept. 21, 2019, murder.

According to the release from the prosecutor's office, police were called to the 9800 block of Willow Avenue in Kansas CIty, Missouri, on Sept. 21 and discovered two victims who were shot and a third victim who was in the same car but uninjured.

The uninjured victim allegedly told police that the three were at the apartment complex to purchase marijuana when a man got in the back seat of the car with a gun and robbed them.

A second person allegedly fired shots from outside the vehicle.

Avilla was killed and the other person was injured.

The victims identified the suspect and witnesses confirmed the identity.

According to the prosecutor's office, a second person was already charged in the case. They did not clarify which person carried out the robbery and which fired shots from outside.
